Jeep® has dominated the winners’ podium by claiming first place in three of 4x4 Magazine’s six award categories – Extreme, SUV and Budget 4x4 of the Year. 4x4 Magazine reviewed the top 4x4s on sale in the UK for their annual ‘4x4 of the Year 2010’ test at Baden Hall, near Eccleshall. The award categories were Budget, Family, SUV, Pick-Ups, Luxury and Extreme.

Hils Everitt, Editor of 4x4 Magazine, said: “This year’s test was reduced to the top 20 4x4s currently on sale in the UK so that we could concentrate on those 4x4s that still retain some credibility as true all-rounders. Our criteria was simple: that vehicles should be powered by a diesel engine and offer some form of sophisticated off-road ability.”

Jeep Wrangler: winner of the Extreme 4x4 of the Year. The judges said: “The Jeep Wrangler came out the winner in a straight fight against Land Rover’s Defender, a category reduced by the absence of the now discontinued Nissan Patrol in the UK and the lack of a diesel option for the Hummer. Compare the Jeep to the Land Rover back-to-back and the Wrangler really starts to show-up the Land Rover’s age. Air bags, stability control, optional axle diff locks, removable hard-top, soft-top, cruise control, sat nav and a choice of manual or auto are all options, if not standard features... It’ll also go the same places as the Defender and the economical diesel makes the more comfortable journeys cheaper.”

Jeep Cherokee: winner of the SUV of the Year.Jeep won again with the Cherokee, which made its debut at last year’s test. This year it triumphed over Land Rover’s Freelander 2 and the Suzuki Grand Vitara. The judges said: “In terms of price and value for money the Cherokee simply cannot be touched. Jeep has packed the Cherokee with enough toys and features that the official list of options extends to just four items! It will also provide a quiet, comfortable drive, returning 34mpg. And its low-range gearing combined with hill descent and hill start assist gives the Jeep genuine off-road capability and it can tow a pick-up busting 2.8 tonnes.”

Jeep Patriot – Budget 4x4 of the Year.“The third of Jeep’s titles went to the Patriot, which had to outclass Daihatsu’s long-serving Terios and the new Fiat Panda Cross.

“It triumphed because you may pay more for the Patriot than either of its rivals, but that does translate into more 4x4 for your money. The VW-sourced 2.0-litre offers well over 40mpg. Although there’s no low range, the on-demand 4x4 system with selectable 4x4 lock-up and traction control, as well as anti-roll mitigation, add up to an impressive package. With typical Jeep generosity the Patriot goes all out by packing in as many features as possible. Once again Jeep has packaged a great product at a price that’s hard to ignore.”

Chrysler LLC Viability Plan Submitted Today to The U.S. Treasury Department

Chrysler LLC viability plan to be finalized by March 31 deadline.Chrysler to complete its aggressive restructuring started in 2007 and 2008.Chrysler viability plan is conservatively based and newly reflects an average annual 1.8 million-unit reduction in the Company’s expected annual U.S. SAAR through 2012.Chrysler’s viability plan is built around a robust product plan, including 24 launches in 48 months and the introduction of electric vehicles to help meet current federal fuel economy standards. The Company’s submission demonstrates standalone viability which could be enhanced through a strategic alliance.Dealers, suppliers and 2nd lien lenders’ concessions have been implemented or fundamentally agreed upon.A tentative agreement has been reached with the UAW that complies with the terms and conditions of The U.S. Treasury Department's loan agreement
Due to unprecedented economic decline and a drop in current and forecasted U.S. SAAR, the Company adds $2 billion to its original $7 billion loan request. Payback of Chrysler LLC’s working capital loans with a premium would begin in 2012.Auburn Hills, Mich. , Feb 17, 2009  -  Chrysler LLC today submitted its viability plan to the U.S. Treasury Department, outlining the Company’s plans to: enhance its product lineup; complete its ongoing aggressive restructuring; and achieve cost reducing concessions from stakeholders. The Company’s plan is required to be finalized by March 31. The submission outlines significant progress towards meeting the terms of the U.S. Treasury Department’s loan agreement related to achieving competitive costs and increasing fuel economy.

“We believe that Chrysler LLC will be viable based on the updated assumptions contained in this submission, and that an orderly restructuring outside of bankruptcy, together with the completion of our standalone viability plan, enhanced by a strategic alliance with Fiat, is the best option for Chrysler employees, our unions, dealers, suppliers and customers. Today, our people are eager to re-establish Chrysler as an iconic American company and, in the process, repay the U.S. government and taxpayers for their faith in our future. We believe the requested working capital loan is the least-costly alternative and will help provide an important stimulus to the U.S. economy and deliver positive results for American taxpayers. This plan will ensure the continued provision of health care and pension benefits to our active employees and retirees, while continuing to protect hundreds of thousands of middle class, quality American jobs at Chrysler, our dealer network and our suppliers.”

To help meet customer needs and increased federal fuel economy standards, Chrysler plans 24 vehicle launches in 48 months, and announced electric technology as a primary strategy for developing fuel-efficient, low emission vehicles, including an electric-drive vehicle in 2010. The viability plan shows compliance with current federal fuel economy requirements as set forth in the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007. Going forward, Chrysler supports the development of a uniform national standard that reflects the input of all constituents. To reduce costs, dealers, suppliers and 2nd lien lenders’ concessions have been implemented or fundamentally agreed upon. A tentative agreement has been reached with the UAW that complies with the terms and conditions of The U.S. Treasury Department's loan agreement. Once realized this tentative agreement would provide Chrysler with a work force cost structure that is competitive with the transplant automotive manufacturers.

Since Chrysler LLC’s original $7 billion submission, there has been an unprecedented decline in the automotive sector. The continued lack of available credit affects consumers and dealers, leading to reduced wholesale orders for Chrysler. Due to this continued lack of consumer credit, we are revising our Seasonally Adjusted Annual Rate (SAAR) forecast in the plan submitted today, which is conservatively based and reflects the reality of a declining automotive industry. We are now projecting a SAAR level of 10.1 million units for this year, (which is a 40-year low for our industry) and an average SAAR level of 10.8 million units for 2009-2012. This is a reduction from our original December submission of 7.2 million units, or an average 1.8 million units annually during the four years. For Chrysler, this represents a sales decline of approximately 720,000 units, (or an average 180,000 units per year) assuming a 10 percent market share. For Chrysler, this results in approximately $18 billion in lost revenue and a $3.6 billion decline in cash inflows during the four years.

Chrysler’s product line is a key component of its Viability Plan. In 2010, the Company will launch four highly successful platforms: a new Jeep Grand Cherokee, a new Dodge Charger, a new Dodge Durango and a new Chrysler 300 (the most awarded car in automotive history since its launch in 2005). The Chrysler 300 launch will be followed by a new, bolder Dodge Charger and an all-new unibody Dodge Durango. In 2008, Chrysler offered six vehicles with highway fuel economy of 28 miles per gallon or better. For 2009, 73 percent of Chrysler LLC’s vehicles show improved fuel economy compared with the prior year’s model. Fuel economy will continue to improve in 2010 with the introduction of the all-new Phoenix V-6 engine, which will provide fuel efficiency improvements of between 6 to 8 percent over the engines it replaces. A two-mode hybrid version of the Company’s best-selling vehicle, the Dodge Ram is scheduled for 2010. The first Chrysler electric-drive vehicle is also scheduled to reach the market in 2010. It will be followed by other electric-drive vehicles, including Range-extended Electric Vehicles, in the following years in order to further reduce fuel consumption. The proposed Fiat alliance would further help the Company achieve these standards as Chrysler gains access to Fiat’s smaller, fuel-efficient platforms and powertrain technologies. The alliance would enable Chrysler to reduce its capital expenditures while supporting the company’s commitment to develop a portfolio of vehicles that support the country’s energy security and environmental objectives.

Even bad weather can’t stop the Northwest Air Ambulance (NWAA) now. When low cloud, fog or violent thunderstorms stop their helicopter flying the NWAA paramedics simply take to their Jeep Grand Cherokee. The £30,795 Limited model was donatedto NWAA by Jeep on Noel’s HQ, the Sky 1 TV show where Noel Edmonds rewards selfless generosity.

Federico Goretti, managing director of Chrysler UK Ltd, explained: “When we found out about the great work the air ambulance does in the north west of England we thought it only correct for a socially aware firm like Jeep to help this vital service in any way possible. Noel’s HQ told us that the NWAA current rapid response vehicle was in desperate need of replacement.” The result was the 3.0-litre V6 CRD was given to the charity to act as a rapid response vehicle - and that means it’s a stand-in helicopter. The NWAA’s Ged Jones said: “Our previous vehicle was 15-years old and on its last legs so Jeep’s generosity has transformed the way we operate. Our paramedics can now respond to accidents swiftly and safely and provide vital support to patients before the ambulances arrive, even when the helicopter is grounded. This car is literally a life saver and an awesome alternative to the chopper.”

Jeep’s legendary go-anywhere ability combined with the Grand Cherokee’s advanced satellite navigation system means the NWAA’s paramedics can attend casualties in remote areas that were inaccessible to their previous vehicle. The Quadra-Trac II four-wheel drive system features Hill Descent Control, Hill Start Assist and traction control making the Jeep a perfect helicopter replacement.

The Northwest Air Ambulance is a registered charity covering Lancashire, Greater Manchester, Cheshire, Merseyside and Cumbria. That’s 5500 square miles of the UK with seven million inhabitants. It receives no Government or lottery funding. It deals with all major motorway incidents, and areas that have poor and restricted road access. On average the NWAA is called out four times a day, rising to 10 in the summer. It needs to raise the £3.5m a year to operate itself.

The Jeep Directory

Since the launch of this publication a few years ago. I have had a number of calls and letters regarding this publication. Most of which has been a great feedback, with most saying that you like the larger format, design and the fact that it is easier to read. Respectfully everyone has commented on the fact that it now has a larger content of suppliers and contact details - far greater than the earlier edition. Even though it does not look much value for £9.99, it’s well worth it for all the information and contact details within. Also the fact that this one, gives everyone more contact details of other suppliers that don’t always advertise on this new online website ‘JeepEzine’, which was really the main reason for its reprint. Another reason for it’s publication, was that a large number of you contact me, asking for other Jeep part suppliers etc, that can not be obtained via the advertisers on this site. Plus it all saves you time and effort in ringing or writing to me for other help and other contact details, you can now have it all in one publication. For those of you that haven’t already purchased your copy, you can do so by either contacting us at the usual address, or just give us a call with your card details etc over the phone (01302 739000). Remember, that this is your guide to ‘all’ the current aftermarket suppliers, current Jeep Dealers, tyres suppliers, lift kit etc, etc. It’s one thing you really all should have and own! Go to Jeep Directory!!

Forth coming articles/contents:

Forth coming articles that will be up here very soon will include:

We take out the New 2008 Cherokee later in August, for a drive on the road and in the Mud, we shall let you know what we think!!
